Dinner for two outcasts (for counterstep)
Oct. 2nd, 2021 04:50 pmLoki had visited Midgar on many occassions before, he'd made no secret of that. But this had to be the longest time in which he'd stayed around, truly experiencing what it felt like to live around humans, taking in what their routines and festivities were like. Experiencing the change of the seasons. And as nights became chillier and longer, Loki became more and more aware of how alone he was in a world made for a comunity he did not belong into.
He had no doubt that James felt something similar to it. Out of place, out of time, unaware of how to make a meaningful connection. And yet it had happened, had it not? Somehow being at a loss was something they shared and, while Loki had continuously pushed the soldier away, things had finally changed.
It was a little and yet meaningful step.
Using his afternoon to pamper himself, Loki enjoyed a long hot bath and a couple of glasses of wine that would become the prelude of what he and James would enjoy together in the evening. He curled his hair enough to let it dry into soft waves that cascaded down his shoulders.
More aware of the contemporary Midgarian fashion, he conjured something that perfectly balanced those looks and his classic Asgardian attires. Soft green fabrics and leather, a shirt that gave enough of a peek at his chest, clothes that accentuated his frame. Golden ornaments and jewlery reminded him of his status while still looking casual. The lavender perfume was the last touch that made things perfect.
It had been a while since he'd put in this effort, he told himself as he checked the clock, aware that James would soon join him.

He'd remained patient through it, understanding how important it was for Loki to at least find some sense of self in New York. Those had all been moments he could claim for himself, though, favors that he'd offered willingly and understood didn't need to be accepted. Now with him actually offering something he knew Loki had been trying to pry from him for a while now, a personal part of himself felt like it was on the line, and Bucky didn't know if he was foolish to have offered it in the first place or more foolish to want Loki to understand what the soldier was really offering.
The thoughts plagued him even up to the door, and while he had prepared reasonably, cleaning himself up a bit more than usual with a properly clean shave and bringing flowers on top of donning the suit he'd worn more times for Loki than anyone else by this point, the possibility that Loki would still find him lacking felt like it could strangle him.
Standing before Loki's door, Bucky hesitated for the first time since growing familiar with it before knocking his usual three, sharp raps. All he could think to do while waiting for Loki to answer was chew on his lip and make sure the flowers he brought were still pristine.

"You look good," he quickly complimented, knowing he ought to recognise the effort Barns had put into this. Should he have done more himself? In Loki's opinion, his attire was quite casual. "Being properly shaved suits you."
He had to admit it though, the shaggier style also looked good on him.
"Are you cold, I could put on the heater."

The bundle spoke its own message, earnest patience and change. Likely it meant little to most others, but when he'd stopped by the florist, it only seemed proper to pick something that wasn't unintentionally insulting.
The compliments caught the soldier off guard, heat crawling up his neck as his smile slid into something more natural, honest. His teeth peeked through the gap in his lips as he gave a soft, pleased huff. "Thanks. Just thought. If you were gonna show your best at something, I could do that on my end, too."
He looked further in a moment before looking back to Loki to answer his query. "I'm fine. It'll get warmer after I start cooking." As if to emphasize the point, he raised the paper shopping bag in his other hand. A quick glance would reveal a reasonably sized collective of goods, clearly intended to be their dinner.

Making sure his guest watched him as he bowed his head to bury his nose into the flowers, Loki took a deep breath, smiled to himself as he enjoyed the natural perfume coming from them. "Lovely."
And it certainly was lovely. They were both putting a bit of an effort here, being amicable from the very beginning, looking their best. Would the rest of the evening be this pleasant? Soon they would both find out. Happy to see the rest of the goods Barnes had brought along, he waved his hand in direction of the kitchen. "Very well. We might as well get started with that then. At least may I offer you a glass of wine?"
